John E. Haapala Jr. - Secretary
Term of Service
|In 1988, I began working for Oregon Tilth in a volunteer capacity. For the next twenty years, I continued working for Tilth, as editor of In Good Tilth, as Director of Research and Education, and as Manger of Program Development. In that time, organic standards went from fourteen pages to a national program, and the annual operating budget of the organization went from $35 to several million.
As a champion of the research and eduction programs for Tilth, I launched the Farmer-Rancher grant program, and published several papers on degradation of soil chemicals. I launched and directed the Farmer Cooperative Genome Project. I served on the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture, as the Western Region representative, and helped draft Farm Bill programs for small and organic farms. During my tenure, I wrote, won, and administered regional and national competitive research grants for Oregon Tilth members.
Since leaving Oregon Tilth in 2008, I have continued to farm my six acres of organic paradise known as Heron's Nest Farm in Junction City, Oregon. I have aso become a successful trial and appellate attorney practicing in municipal, state, and federal courts here in Oregon, based out of Eugene, Oregon.
|I submitted my name for the Board of Directors to lend my historical and national perspective to Oregon Tilth's future. I also pledge my willingness to put my shoulder into maintaining Oregon Tilth's sterling reputation for leadership and credibility in the organic farming industry.
