Jacobs Farm Del Cabo
Farming over 3,700 acres along the Baja California Penninsula, we work with over 250 small family farms to bring delightful cherry tomatoes and herbs to market.
Founded in 1986, Del Cabo is a small scale
farmers association in collaboration with Jacobs Farm. Farming over
3,700 acres along the Baja California peninsula, Del Cabo has been
certified Organic by Oregon Tilth since 1986.
Del Cabo grew out of our experience in the Central Highlands of
Guatemala working with indigenous communities. As directors of a small
Non-Governmental Organization funded by agencies like C.A.R.E. and
Save-the-Children, we developed wood saving cook stoves, simple
techniques for solar drying bananas, legume selection and inoculation
of pasturelands and improved small farm yields.
Instead of a project subsidized by donor agency grants, as was
the work in Guatemala, we wanted Del Cabo to be self-supporting. We
believed that community self-help programs needed to be operated as
businesses. No free money. Pay as you go.
In 1985 we presented local government officials at the tip of
Baja California peninsula a plan to teach small-scale family farmers
how to grow food organically and connect them to the global market. We
saw a clear opportunity for off-season, flavorful, organically-grown
produce. The first box was harvested and shipped to San Francisco in
February of 1986. Since then Del Cabo has grown to over 250 family
farms, many smaller than 5 acres and has improved the average annual
income from $3,000 to over $20,000 US dollars.
Del Cabo cherry tomatoes known for their flavor, are sought
after many markets while Jacobs Farm has become known for its high
quality certified organic herb production.
