Organic Valley, CROPP Cooperative, America's largest farmer owned cooperative and is one of the nation’s leading organic brands.
Independent and farmer-owned, CROPP Cooperative is America’s largest cooperative of organic farmers and is one of the nation’s leading organic brands, Organic Valley. Organized in 1988, the cooperative represents more than 1,200 farmers in 34 states and one Canadian province and realized a record $432.5 million in 2007 sales. Focused on its founding mission of keeping family farmers farming, the cooperative produces a variety of organic foods, including organic milk, soy, cheese, butter, spreads, creams, eggs, produce and juice, which are marketed under the Organic Valley Family of Farms brand in supermarkets, natural foods stores and food cooperatives nationwide. CROPP farmer-members also produce a full range of organic meats under the Organic Prairie label. CROPP Cooperative has been certified by Oregon Tilth since June 10, 1995.
To support its mission of keeping family farmers farming, CROPP Cooperative has committed to paying its farmers a fair and stable pay-price for their products. This pay price averaged 25% higher than the conventional pay price in 2007. This higher price, in turn, provides the opportunity for organic farmers to stay on their land and pass the family farm on to future generations. CROPP Cooperative also works in partnership with like-minded organizations nationwide to educate consumers about organic food and farming.
Two of the most recent programs in which Organic Valley and Organic Prairie farmer-members are involved include various on-farm renewable energy and sustainability endeavors through the Farmer Renewable Energy Program (FREP), and the farmer-funded Farmers Advocating for Organic (FAFO) grant fund which supports organic research, education and advocacy. The cooperative employs over 400 staff located in Wisconsin at the La Farge headquarters, Cashton distribution center and Chaseburg creamery.
