21 Acres Center for Local Food and Sustainable Living recently announced its plan for the retail space in their new agricultural training center currently under construction near Woodinville, WA in east King County.  The 21 Acres Local Food Co-op will be a producer and patron owned, year-round retail market selling a wide selection of seasonally available food produced within a 300-mile radius.

The co-op model combines the buying and selling power of its members to lower the cost and increase accessibility of local, healthy, sustainably produced food.  Shoppers at the 21 Acres Local Food Co-op will be investing in the Sammamish Valley by supporting local farmers and value-added producers spurring job creation while keeping their money circulating within the community. A big advantage for members is when the co-op makes a profit, they receive a portion of the earnings based on the amount they buy or sell at the co-op during the year.  Co-op members will have the capacity to improve themselves economically and socially through mutual cooperation.

The co-op will also strive to bridge the gap between small-scale farmers and large food service establishments such as healthcare facilities, schools & restaurants. Orchestrated through an online marketplace, local chefs will have access to all the producers' products in one place for efficient ordering. The co-op will then act as a receiving and distribution center for these orders.

The retail storefront and distribution center located at 21 Acres at 13701 NE 171st Street, Woodinville, WA will also be home to a commercial kitchen, value-added processing area, classrooms, event space and an 18-acre working farm.  Members and non-members will be welcome to shop at the food co-op, which anticipates opening spring of 2012.

You can get involved now as a founding member of the 21 Acres Local Food Co-op and help make critical decisions about how co-op operations might best effect change in the local food economy.  Attend the next organizing meeting for further details:
April 4th, 2011 at 7p.m.  - Producers meeting: All interested producers welcome!
