Instructor: Harry MacCormack Harry has been working with grains, beans, and seeds on a homestead scale for 40 years. During the past 7 years the research plots at Sunbow Farm have been a large part of the drive to create the Southern Willamette Valley Bean and Grain Project. Some of the plot plantings have included black, pinto, soy, lentil, red and garbanzo beans, over-wintering peas, 3 rye varieties, 2 triticale varieties, 4 wheat varieties, 2 varieties of quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat and sunflower and will all be demonstrated during this workshop.

Family Farm & Ranch Rally day brings producers and eaters from across the state to Salem for a full day of citizen lobbying training, meetings with legislators and a rally on the capitol steps. We even set up a Farmers Market in the capitol galleria! All of this is to build support for sustainable, family agriculture for current and future generations. Citizens lobby legislators on specific legislation and talk to them about barriers and opportunities for agriculture and food production.

Dr. Susan Andrews will provide an overview of NRCS' Soil Health Initiative and then present the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis to explain why organic practices can be part of this effort. Drs. Michelle Wander and Carmen Ugarte will review the NRCS enrollment tool for the Conservation Stewardship Program and discuss how well organic practices perform when evaluated by this tool.
