The Oregon berry industries are sponsoring a training program to educate farmers on how to prevent on-farm microbial contamination of Oregon produce. In 2014 "Train the Trainers" Food Safety Workshops will be held in English and Spanish for any Oregon produce farmer. They will prepare participants to train harvest workers on recommended food safety practices. The Workshops are Free but require registration.
Food safety has become a critical priority for agriculture producers. For Oregon growers, it is important that consumers trust that their produce is universally safe to eat. Because of this, the Oregon Berry Commissions applied for and received a Specialty Crop Block Grant to help educate farmers on how to prevent on-farm microbial contamination of Oregon produce. In 2014 they are again sponsoring Free Food Safety “Train the Trainers” Workshops for all Oregon produce farmers.
Take advantage of this 3-hour program providing food safety training based on the California Strawberry Commission Food Safety Practices for Harvest Workers™ flip chart study guide. The flip chart will be provided to everyone who attends at no charge and is intended to be taken back to the farm to be used by growers and field supervisors to train harvest workers on recommended food safety practices. The flip chart is made up of seven distinct chapters that cover different areas of food safety practices that workers must follow. Chapters cover topics such as use of the bathroom units, eating and drinking in the field, handling of fruit and packaging, and hand washing. Each chapter can be used to do a brief tailgate training for a harvest crew in 15 minutes or less.
