Learn organic land care management from your peers.
Join us for a Peer Learning Session on Thursday, June 26 at Willamette University in Salem, OR.
This free peer-to-peer learning session for landscape professionals is a great opportunity to discover organic land care techniques and participate in discussion led by organic land care practitioner, Mickey Cochrane.
Topics of Discussion:
Prior to 2006, Willamette University relied extensively on herbicides and insecticides to maintain the grounds. When Jim Andersen became grounds manger in 2007, he started by disposing the entire chemical arsenal. Anderson then brought Jim Toler of Willamette Organics on board to analyze the soil needs, inoculate the soil with compost tea, and start an organic fertilization program.
The grounds department now controls weeds using several methods:
Hand weeding using hoes, hand hoes, etc.
Flame thrower for the gravel areas and for annual weeds
- Mulch to protect the soil and smother weed seeds
- Using OMRI approved herbicides.
