Proper Livestock Handling Now Makes for Prime Cuts Later

We've all heard the story; someone bought a few hogs, goats, beef, sheep, or poultry only to have mishap after mishap. Just getting them home was a tale worthy of a Tonight Show monologue. Breakouts and good neighbor roundups, numerous late night emergency vet calls, nutritional problems, unruly and dangerous behavior, the list can be endless. Suddenly an investment in meat for the table or market became a nightmare costing much more than steak every night.

Learn how to keep your livestock investment 'in the black' at Beginning Livestock Handling & Care presented by the WSU Snohomish County Extension 4-H and Agriculture programs. The event takes place Saturday (9am-3pm) and Sunday (9am-4pm), April 9 & 10, 2011 at the Sheriff's Posse Arena at 5421 S. Machias Rd., just north of Snohomish, WA.

Hands-on workshops with live animals will include topics such as hoof trimming, injections, halter training, nutrition, fencing, and more! Taught by award-winning seniors from the WSU Snohomish County 4-H Livestock Program, workshop instructors have the experience and know-how needed to raise prize-winning livestock. In addition, a CD-ROM loaded with resources for each species will be provided to all attendees. Five workshops available; take as many as you like.

Poultry Sat. Apr 9, 9:00-11:00am: Learn the basics of proper care and handling for all types of poultry. Egg & meat breeds, housing, nutrition, & more. Demonstration and hands-on.

Beef Sat. Apr. 9 12:00-3:00pm: Learn proper leading, handling, dehorning and injection techniques along with fencing, nutrition, and more. Demonstration and hands-on.

Swine Sun. Apr 10, 9:00-11:00am: Learn how to raise great pork with safety as a focus. Handling, housing, fencing, nutrition, and more. Demonstration and hands-on.

Goats Sun. Apr 10, 12:00-2:00pm: Dairy or meat, you'll learn the basics of handling, nutrition, fencing, housing, dehorning, and more. Demonstration and hands-on.

Sheep Sun. Apr 10, 2:00-4:00pm: Whether for lamb chops or wool you'll learn about hoof trimming, nutrition, housing, and proper handling techniques. Demonstration and hands-on.
