Oregon Farmers: Join the growing school food market!

School food is a relatively untapped and reliable market for farmers. Relationships between farmers and schools benefit local communities, and provide some of the healthiest, freshest food to children. The state of Oregon recently awarded more than $1M in grants to Oregon schools to buy local foods, which means that Oregon schools are more able to afford local food than ever before. Ecotrust is excited to be able to provide FREE assistance to help farmers and other food producers in Oregon to make connections and sell to these school districts.

They are looking especially for:

  • Farms located in NW Oregon, SW Washington, or able to supply to this region (fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products, grains, and minimally processed foods)
  • Farmers and food producers  who are interested in working with schools, or who have worked with schools before
  • Farms that grow products that might be appropriate for school districts, or who might be willing to grow such products

Ecotrust would be interested in helping by:

  • Connecting food suppliers with the school districts they’ve been working with, as well as with the districts that will receive some of the >$1M in state grant money for Farm to School
  • Providing information, resources, and help troubleshooting how to work with schools and preschools
  • Promoting your farm and products to school districts, parents, students, and communities

Oregon Tilth hopes some of you explore this exciting opportunity to ensure that schools are buying from local farms, and that kids are eating healthy, local foods. If you are interested in becoming a part of the growing school food market, Ecotrust would love to hear from you!
