September 17, 2013 -– The recipients of the 2013 Oregon Organic Coalition (OOC) Awards For Excellence were announced at a celebratory luncheon at the Ecotrust Building in Portland. The event was keynoted by Peter Buckley, Oregon State Representative for Ashland, Talent, Pheonix, Jacksonville, Oregon.

OOC honored representatives from Oregon’s farming, retail, academic, political and food production communities honored these organic innovators. Award recipients included Fred Meyers, Cafe Mam, Dan Sullivan, Forest Glen Jerseys, Spring Hill Farm, Hunton's Farm and Camas Country Mills and Organic Produce Warehouse.

Oregon Tilth's Executive Director Chris Schreiner won the award for Individual Advocate.

Upon receiving the award, Schreiner remarked that, "It’s been inspiring to see the ground the organic sector has gained. Our progress demonstrates we can accomplish so much more together than we can achieve alone." Stressing the importance of collaborative advocacy as a strategy, he continued, "Oregon Tilth has a great partnership with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). We’re training a lot of conservationists on the ground. This year alone, the Oregon NRCS office has obligated $625,000 in contracts with organic farmers and transitioning-to-organic farmers to implement more conservation practices and provide technical assistance to growers.

These examples highlight collaboration and working together with a common purpose and on common ground. If we continue to do this, and continue to increase our voices in the legislature when more policies are set, then the bright spot of organic agriculture and food systems will just continue to grow."
