Why a Research and Promotion program?

What is a Research and Promotion Check-off program?
Federal Research and Promotion Programs are industry-funded generic research and marketing programs designed to increase domestic and/or international demand for the industry's agricultural commodities, thereby increasing the potential long-term economic growth of all sectors of that industry. An Organic Research and Promotion Program is not a funding vehicle for OTA. A distinct board appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture would govern the program. Read More.

How could the organic industry achieve an organic Research and Promotion Program?
This is a long-term endeavor, assume 3 years. First, OTA will advocate for removal of the current barriers to establishing an organic research and promotion order. All substantive decisions regarding the parameters of the program will be made by the industry itself. OTA stands ready to facilitate decision making as well as to take the lead on the administrative effort to submit an application to USDA- Agriculture Marketing Service (AMS). Read More.

How is the Steering Committee structured?
The Steering Committee includes (10) First Handlers, (4) Domestic Producers, (3) Importer Handler, (1) Marketing Cooperative Representative, and (2) Members at-large. The Committee also reflects the category breakdown of the organic industry. Read more.


How can I get involved?

The Organic Trade Association is holding town-hall-style forums across the country to evaluate this opportunity and facilitate an industry wide decision. Input from the entire organic community is needed. All organic industry members are encouraged to participate in the town hall meetings, and there is no charge to attend.
