December 16, 2010
The U.S. Department of Agriculture released the final environmental impact statement (EIS) that evaluates the potential environmental effects of deregulating Roundup Ready GM Alfalfa.
The EIS covers three possible outcomes:
- Leave the RR alfalfa's status as a regulated article
- Grant nonregulated status to RR alfalfa
- Establish geographic restrictions and isolation distances for RR alfalfa production
Note: the EIS is not a decision document but rather an analysis of possible impacts of the the alternatives regarding the environment, economics, human health and safety. The final EIS is available for public review for at least 30 days before the USDA will publish a record of decision on how it will proceed.
