Technical Assistance & Training

We provide technical assistance working with growers, the USDA, conservation planners, university extensions and others to raise the bar for what conservation on organic farms looks like. Our work in this area serves a number of audiences from USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) staff to farmers and ranchers. We deliver trainings and other education at conferences, workshops, through webinars and other platforms covering a range of topics, including:

  • Basic conservation planning
  • Pest and weed management
  • Nutrient management
  • Soil health
  • Crop rotations
  • Cover cropping
  • Pasture management
  • Livestock living conditions and outdoor access
  • Accessing federal conservation programs

We provide these trainings through our 6+ year national cooperative agreement with the USDA NRCS as well as our work with leadership across USDA agencies to facilitate coordination of standards and regulations.

Technical Resources

In partnership with other leading organizations such as the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Xerces Society, Oregon State University, the National Center for Appropriate Technology and many others, Oregon Tilth develops educational resources to support  continued improvement and cutting edge practices for organic producers. In collaboration with over 30 partners, we’ve developed the National Organic Farming Handbook, a free online publication providing guidance on how to implement conservation on organic farms.

In addition, we take on complex topics and distill them into easy-to-access learning resources, such as the Cover Crop Implementation Guides, lessons learned reports, fact sheets, and other tools available in our Resource Library. From supporting native pollinator health to biological controls for pest management (e.g., “beneficials”), we lead webinars, training workshops and create technical documents that support producers in practice, not theory.
