Oregon Tilth Announces Leadership Transition – Marking Over 50 Years of Mission-Driven Impact in Organic Agriculture
Corvallis, OR — Monday, June 23, 2025 – Oregon Tilth, one of the nation’s leading nonprofit organic certifiers focused on education and advocacy, announces a strategic leadership transition as Chris Schreiner steps down from his role as Chief Executive Officer after more than two decades of service.
Chris has been a cornerstone of Oregon Tilth’s evolution and influence, serving as a values-driven leader who cultivated trust and impact across the organic agriculture community.
“It’s been a profound privilege to walk alongside this movement and shape Oregon Tilth’s journey for 27 years. I’ve witnessed the remarkable growth of organic food and agriculture, and the power of people and partnerships to drive lasting change. I’m especially grateful to Oregon Tilth’s dedicated, creative, and integrity-driven staff. As we enter the next chapter, I have full confidence in our existing leadership, steadfast values, and innovative vision to carry the organization forward,” said Chris Schreiner, outgoing CEO of Oregon Tilth.
Since joining the organization in the late 1990s, Schreiner has been instrumental in building Oregon Tilth’s national reputation for integrity, innovation, and client-centered service. Under his leadership, Oregon Tilth expanded its certification programs, deepened policy engagement, and invested in equitable agricultural systems grounded in environmental stewardship and community collaboration.
“Chris has led with passion, humility, and a commitment to the organic movement,” said Ani Kame’enui, Board President of Oregon Tilth. “It has been a privilege to work alongside him. His legacy will continue to inspire the organization’s work well into the future.”
“The Board is committed to stewarding this transition with care and transparency,” Kame’enui continued. “We extend our deepest gratitude to Chris for his leadership and look forward to honoring Oregon Tilth’s mission in close partnership with staff, clients, and the broader organic community.”
To ensure continuity and stability, Oregon Tilth’s Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Leonard Freeman, Jr., the organization’s Chief Operating Officer, as Interim CEO. A strategic and people-centered leader, Dr. Freeman brings operational depth, mission alignment, and a clear vision for Oregon Tilth’s future.
“As we mark this important transition, I want to thank Chris for his stewardship and tireless service,” said Dr. Leonard Freeman, Jr., Interim CEO. “I also want to extend my sincere appreciation to our staff, clients, partners, and community advocates who walk with us each day. You are the heart of this organization.”
“Together, we will honor the legacy of Oregon Tilth’s first 50 years by leaning into the opportunities ahead. Deepening our commitment to biologically sound and socially equitable agriculture, strengthening the client experience, and expanding our education, advocacy, and certification programs. This is a shared journey, and I’m humbled to lead alongside such a passionate and innovative team,” Freeman added.
As the organization begins this next chapter, Oregon Tilth remains grounded in its founding mission to cultivate organic systems that benefit people and the planet. The Board of Directors will continue to provide timely updates as it works with staff and stakeholders to shape the organization’s long-term leadership future.
